Here at the Christchurch Foot Clinic we’re proud to be official stockists of Archies flip flops. If you’re suffering from plantar fasciitis or other heel or foot pain – or are just keen to avoid it – Archies really can make a difference. If we didn’t believe they did, we wouldn’t be recommending them.
We’ve got a whole range of sizes, styles, and colours in stock, so you can try them on. If you can’t find what you need, we can order them in specially for you.
You’re probably wondering why we think they are so worth recommending, whether or not you have orthotics or foot and heel issues. Good question – let’s get into the details.
Heel and foot pain are common problems
Heel and foot pain is a common problem that many people suffer from, and plantar fasciitis is often the cause. Knowing what you can do to both prevent and treat it gives you options. Wearing the right supportive footwear, like Archies flip flops, can be a simple but effective part of relief and prevention.
What is plantar fasciitis and why does it hurt?
The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue that runs from your heel bone to your toes. It supports the arch of your foot and acts as a shock absorber when you walk. Tension and stress can cause small tears, which can lead to inflammation and a stabbing pain in the bottom of your foot near the heel. This pain can be worse after periods of inactivity, so, for example, first thing in the morning and when you stand up after you’ve been sitting down for a while.
There are a few things that commonly lead to plantar fasciitis, but there’s often no ‘obvious’ cause. This is one of the reasons it’s so important to take preventive measures, even if you don’t currently have issues.
Risk factors for plantar fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is more likely to affect those who are:
- Runners
- Overweight
- In jobs that involve a lot of standing
- Aged 40-60 years
Why arch support matters so much for your foot health
Arch support isn’t just for people with flat feet. We have an arch in our foot which, when we’re walking or running:
- increases foot flexibility
- helps distribute shock and weight evenly
- improves alignment
- reduces strain on the plantar fascia
When this support is compromised, it leads to problems. Wearing well-designed, well-fitting shoes and, if necessary, inserting orthotics into shoes, trainers, and boots can provide support. Wearing flat sandals, flip flops and other footwear that offers little or no support for the foot doesn’t help.
Plantar fasciitis tends to be more prevalent in the summer. During these months we are more likely to walk around barefoot or wear flip flops and sandals. We also often just tend to get more exercise, with the longer days and better weather. If you usually need orthotics in your shoes, you have the dilemma of hot, unfashionable feet (summer dress or shorts and shoes that work with orthotics, for example) or no orthotics.
And, even if you don’t have orthotics in your shoes, there’s often no easily attributable reason for developing plantar fasciitis, as we’ve already discovered.
Why we recommend Archies Flip Flops for heel and foot pain prevention and relief
Archies are recommended by podiatrists because they are a great alternative to flat sandals and flip flops. They are stylish and fashionable, yet they provide arch support too. It’s a win-win.
Archies offer:
- Orthotic level arch support
- An elevated heel to reduce strain on the Achilles tendon
- A specialised closed-cell foam material that moulds to your foot
- A one-piece design that’s more comfortable and more durable than standard flip flop design
- Lightweight, flexible, attractive styles that also provide stability
Plantar fasciitis is not the only foot problem that Archies flip flops can help to prevent or alleviate. Other common foot and heel issues Archies can be beneficial for include:
- Achilles tendonitis
- Heel spurs
- Flat feet
- General foot fatigue
- Post-sport recovery
When and when not to wear Archies flip flops
Archies flip flops are great for everyday wear in the summer when you’re off to the beach or just generally out and about – as well as when you’re at home. They should not be considered as a replacement for orthotics or other specialist shoes you may have, however. Check with your podiatrist if you’re not sure if they would be beneficial for you and when you should be wearing them. And remember to always let us know if you have persistent pain too.
